Is Madeira the next destination on your travel plans?
If so, you’ve come to the right place to start planning your adventure.

Madeira is an island full of beautiful landscapes, magical viewpoints, amazing food, and unforgettable road trips. From mountain tops above the clouds to natural volcanic pools by the ocean, there’s something new to discover around every corner.

From the memorable views at Pico do Arieiro to the crystal-clear waters of the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools, the island offers an incredible variety of places to explore.

One of the best ways to experience all of this is by taking a road trip around the island. Having a car allows you to travel at your own pace, discover hidden spots, and stop at viewpoints whenever the scenery demands it, which happens quite often in Madeira.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through a 5-day Madeira trip itinerary, highlighting some of the island’s most beautiful locations, great stops along the way, and a few local tips to help you make the most of your Madeira island trip.

Day 1 – Enjoy the capital (Funchal) and the South Coast

Start your trip in Funchal, the capital and cultural heart of Madeira, spend the morning exploring the old town streets, visiting local markets, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the city.

Afterwards, take a short drive west to the famous Cabo Girão Skywalk, an impressive glass platform sits on one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe and offers incredible panoramic views over the ocean and the southern coastline.

Continue your journey to the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, a perfect place to stop for lunch or dinner while enjoying beautiful views over the bay. The colorful fishing boats, small waterfront restaurants, and traditional atmosphere make it an ideal spot to relax and try some delicious local seafood.

This first day is a relaxed introduction to Madeira and a great way to start your road trip.

Day 2 – Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro and Visit Santana

For an unforgettable experience, wake up early and drive up to Pico do Arieiro, at over 1,800 meters above sea level, it’s one of the highest points on the island and a spectacular place to watch the sunrise above the clouds.

After taking in the views, continue your drive across the mountains toward the north coast, the next stop is Santana, famous for its traditional triangular houses with thatched roofs, and with an amazing viewpoint the Miradouro do Guindaste.

These colorful houses have become one of Madeira’s most recognizable landmarks and offer a glimpse into the island’s rural heritage. While visiting Santana, you can also stop at one of the local restaurants to try traditional dishes like cozido, a hearty meal that is very popular on the island.

The drive to Santana is also part of the experience, with incredible mountain views and lush green landscapes along the way that often make visitors stop just to take in the scenery.

Try to spend some time exploring the village and enjoying the peaceful surroundings before continuing your journey.

Day 3 – Discover the North Coast

The north coast of Madeira is known for its dramatic scenery, steep cliffs, and lush vegetation.

Start your day at Seixal Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, with black volcanic sand and dramatic mountain backdrop, it’s an incredible place for photos or a relaxing walk, but take into consideration it is a very sought out beach on the island, and you can encounter some traffic there.

Next, drive along the scenic coastal road to Ribeira da Janela. This area is famous for its unique rock formations rising from the ocean and for the spectacular viewpoints along the coastline.

On the way, consider stopping in São Vicente, either before or after visiting Seixal Beach. It’s a great place to enjoy lunch or grab a quick snack, with several lovely restaurants and cafés located along the main street offering beautiful views of the sea.

Driving along the north coast is one of the highlights of any Madeira road trip, with dramatic landscapes, steep cliffs, and breathtaking ocean views appearing around almost every corner.

Day 4 – Porto Moniz and the Fanal Forest

Today you’ll explore the northwestern side of the island, start by visiting the famous Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools.

These natural volcanic pools are filled with clear Atlantic water and surrounded by dramatic lava rock formations. If the weather allows, it’s a fantastic place to take a swim while enjoying the unique scenery.

After Porto Moniz, drive up into the mountains to visit the mystical Fanal Forest. This ancient laurel forest is part of Madeira’s UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest and is famous for its centuries-old trees and misty atmosphere.

Walking through this forest feels like stepping into another world and it’s one of the most unique landscapes on the island.

Day 5 – Explore Ponta de São Lourenço

Finish your road trip by visiting Ponta de São Lourenço, located on the eastern tip of the island.

This peninsula looks completely different from the rest of Madeira, instead of green forests and mountains, you’ll find dramatic volcanic cliffs, rugged landscapes, and breathtaking ocean views.

The hiking trail here is one of the most popular on the island and offers spectacular scenery along the entire peninsula. Even if you don’t do the full hike, the views alone make it worth the visit.
